Aizsargi (Civil/Home Guards) Medal for Effort, bronze. Aizsargu medala "Par Centibu". Medal established in 1939 was intended for the lower ranks of the Home Guards. There was only one class. Due to WW2 and Soviet occupation in June 1940, very few medals were actually made and awarded. According to our reference material (by V. Kavaliauskas), only a few hundred were issued. Medal in oxydized bronze, showing just slight wear. Original ribbon worn, top of backing metal plate cut through but not detractive. All original ribbon/safety pin/hanger arrangement. Medal itself in very good condition. 28mm dia. A rare find. Item # Lat-2 *SOLD* |

Firefighter's badge of recognition. Light gilt (traces remaining) and enameled sections. Unlike any we've seen in reference material - similar to First class but lacking center enamels. Since 2nd class is not enamelled - it is presumably a variant of the 1st class. Multi part construction, good quality. Frame nicely vaulted. Appears to be silver but unmarked. Some light damage to the center disk band of a starburst. Interesting badge. No backplate. 56mm x 33mm. Item # Lat-12 (105) |

1928, Medal for the 10th anniversary of the Liberation War. Awarded to members of armed forces and citizens who supported troops during battles. Also awarded to foreigners (mostly Estonian, Polish, Danish, Swedish and Finnish officers helping with the war cause). Medal in bronze, good details to all. Designer and maker names to bottom of obverse: ZIM. STROMBERGS Grav. BERCS. Original ribbon with crossed swords - this indicates award to one wounded or injured during battle. All original, shows light wear but no damage. Attractive medal - getting hard to obtain. 35mm in diameter, swords are (correct) 25mm long. (I have often seen swords attached to the ribbon which were not original; if you're unsure about your piece, measure them and pay attention to the hilts which are rather distinctive). Order of Vesthardus. Silver merit medal (2nd class) on original ribbon. All classes of this Order are very hard to obtain and always command respectable prices worldwide. The Order was founded on Nov. 17,1938; awarding ceased on June 13, 1940. This extremely short-lived Order is certainly one of the more difficult to find. Medals of Merit of the Order were issued to people of lower rank. Majority of such awards were made on the Anniversary of Latvian Independence (very beginning of Order's existence). Total of 1,022 awards of Silver Merit Medal were issued. Due to Soviet, then German and again Soviet intrusions, many Orders were destroyed (as significant people of Latvia did not want the occupants' attention drawn to them). 30mm in diamter and 32mm wide trifold ribbon (all correct for this medal). Rare item, would enrich any collection. Great condition to all. Item # Lat-8 *SOLD* |

Shows age and wear, no damage to speak of. Enamel intact. 46mm x 31mm, nut 28.2mm in diameter, post 4mm. Guaranteed original. Item # Lat-9 *SOLD* |

Aizsargu Cross of Merit. The Latvian Aizsargs (Home Guard/National Guard) was founded in 1919. Members took an active part in the War of Liberation. Many were decorated with Latvian Bear Slayer Military Order (highest award by Latvia). During the 1930's, the Home Guard decided to have their own award - the Cross of Merit - and it came in one class only. It is hard to estimate the number issued, but according to the best known researchers it may have reached 1000, making it quite rare indeed. Not surprisingly, many were 'disposed of' during early days of the Communist regime for fear of repercussions. Bronze gilt, superb quality enamels - no chipping. Unmarked (very few of these were marked), but no doubt by V. Millers. All original as issued (ribbon, suspension, pin). 40mm x 40mm. Great piece. Priced well below value guides. Item # Lat-10 *SOLD* |
