Edith Cavell, Marie Depage Medal - 1915 - N'OUBLIONS JAMAIS'

NEW! Edith Cavell, Marie Depage Medal - 1915 - N'OUBLIONS JAMAIS' -. Edith Cavell should need no introduction, being one of the most recognized women martyrs of the WW1. Marie Depage was aboard RMS Lusitania when it was sunk; she was en route to work with Cavell in Europe.

Designed by Armand Bonnetain in 1919. Large, non wearable bronze medals were commissioned by the Belgian school for graduate nurses (Commission de l’Ecole belge d’infirmières diplômées). Those were made by the known firm of Fonson & Cie.

This smaller, wearable version appears to be very rare and the only mention we found of this is in the collections of the Imperial War Museum (and there is no image there). This smaller medal differs from the non wearable by the reverse which reads: "1915 - N'OUBLIONS JAMAIS' -". The large medal has the following: "1915 - REMEMBER -".

Having researched this for long time, the only other mention of this small medal we found is from the archives of the Royal London Hospital. Again, there are no images but the entry reads that such medal was awarded to the nurses at the end of the 2nd year of studies, at the Institut of Edith Cavell and Marie Depage. They also mention 3 year badge which we know is much earlier vintage so their entries might not be entirely correct.

This medal comes with beautiful ribbon, bow arranged and with pin. 28mm in diameter. No maker marks, only designer: A.Bonnetain 1919. Very nice condition, lovely patina. Should be classifed as rare. Item # Rdc-145. *SOLD*

England - Great Britain - United Kingdom- Scotland
Early Scottish Territorial Red Cross Brigade badge
Early Scottish Territorial Red Cross Brigade badge. Organization was originally founded in 1908. It was approved by the War Office as the Scottish Branch of the British Red Cross Society. It was intended as a formation of voluntary aid detachments for service in the event of war. It comprised of 3 districts, each containing number of counties. Badges were only issued to registered
members of detachments and had to be purchased by the member. The Brigade was immediately mobilised after the proclamation of War in 1914. Sadly, there are no mentions of the Brigade after that - wheather it changed name/structure - is not known (Scottish Red Cross did not seem to know much about the history...). Badge offered is a beautiful, original period one. Brass with loops (lugs) and pin. Original faded red backing is still present but in fragile state. Should be regarded as rare. A most interesting and really nice looking badge. Quite large, measuring 56mm in diameter. Die struck and slightly vaulted. Worn condition with excellent patina. Item # Rdc-144 *SOLD*

SBBM Alsace Lorraine medaille General Paul Pau france WW1

Set of 2 medals attributed to General Paul Pau. These unusual medals were designed as WW1 commemorative awards of the French Red Cross Committe for the regions of ALSACE and LORRAINE.

The interesting part here is that these medals came as wearable with suspensions and ribbons. The pair offered here were made as non wearable, there are no signs of alterations or removal of the suspensions.

General Paul Pau started his career as soldier during Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), when he lost his right arm. Advanced through ranks and became General in 1903. Brought back from retirement by General Joffre in 1914, Gen.Pau was tasked with command of the Army of Alsace, war actions did not go well for the French and Pau moved on to the French Supreme War Council; and later various foreign missions. In 1918, Genaral Paul Pau became the head (leader) of the SBBM (Société de Secours aux Blessés Militaires). It is quite possible that the pair of the medals were given to him as first (early) recipient or such. Our reasearch here, aided by the CRF historian gave no further clues (2009). It seems to be the only set made with no suspensions.

The design of the Lorraine medal was a variation of a brochure published in 1916 by the Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint).

Design of the Alsace medal was also also published by Monnaie de Paris but in 1915, and used by the UFF as medal for medical administrators (in the military hospitals). Both were worn suspended from chest ribbons in silver or bronze grade.

Pair offered here are struck by the Paris Mint in silver (hallmarked). Attributes are nicely engraved. Both medals measure 31.5mm in diameter and planchets are 1.5mm and thicker. Please note that we do not want to separate the set. These were clearly given to one recipient and it is only fitting that medals should stay together. Item # Fra-297 (350)

Red Cross Merit Order 1st class. Royal period, most likely 2nd type (after 1894). Most beautiful example, multi part construction of French manufacture. Punch mark of A. Chobillon on the eye, also French silver fineness hallmark (head of wild boar), most likely of WW1 or Spanish American War vintage. Erronous inscription: 'IN HOC SIGNO VINCES' (should be 'In hoc signo Salus') which is probably synonymous with this particular manufacturer. Quality is considerably better then Spanish-made pieces we've handled to date. SMMB medal to Anna Caroline Maxwell us army nurse corps

NEW! Relief Society for Military Wounded membership medal. The SBBM (Société de Secours aux Blessés Militaires) was actually the first organization (title) of the French Red Cross (in the followance of the roughly outlined ideas during signing of first Geneva Convetion), founded in 1864. The original SBBM had split into 3 branches: SBBM,  ADF (1879 - Association of Ladies of France - this was meant for women of Catholic orientation) and UFF (1881 - Union of the Women of France, meant for the women of Protestant orientation). Action of all 3 branches were jointly managed by a Central Committee (established in 1907) and continued to operate until 1940 when CRF (Croix-Rouge Française) was established.

Medal offered here is remarkable due to attribution. Beautifully hand engraved on the revese : " 1918 Anna C. Maxwell". This would definitely be the SBBM honourary membership badge of one of the most infuential women in the American Red Cross - Anna Caroline Maxwell, credited with being instrumental in establishing of the US Army Nurse Corps. She is often referred to as "American Florence Nightingale".

Original medal in silvered copper, shows slight wear. Ribbon lightly soiled, complete with originally arranged safety pin fastener. Rare opportunity to own this historically important item in the 'life' of the American Red Cross. Medal measures 26.1mm in width (oval part). Item # Fra-296 *SOLD*

1939-1945 Slovak Red Cross exemplary service badge

1939-1945 Slovak Red Cross exemplary service badge GOLD Class. There were 3 classes of this badge: bronze, silver and gold. Bronze was issued for 5 years of service, silver for 10 and gold for 20. Needless to say, all gold badges are rare. The Slovak Red Cross was founded in 1918 so badges awarded for 20 years service could only have been issued to original members, joining during early 1920's! All Slovak items are rare due to short period of independence (39-45). Round badge of traditional linden leafs rim with red enamel band. Superimposed (via 2 small rivets) is an eagle clawing the Red Cross enamelled badge. Full inscription (in Slovak) in relief to the rear of badge, impressed number (135) to reverse - very low, most likely shortly after award was instituted. Bronze gilt. Shows age and light wear. Prussia - Red Cross doctor's breast badge.

Prussia - Red Cross doctor's breast badge. This pattern dates from 1880's until beginning of WW1. Issued mainly to long time members of the German Red Cross, oftentimes as an achievement award or long service. Full size breast star, state recognized and authorized for wear (many red cross insignia were not) during formal State of Prussia celebrations and occasions. Next to Red Cross medal of Honour it was the highest (Red Cross imposed) Prussian decorations. 4-armed white enamelled cross with center disc of black/white and red enamels and inscription (Preussischer Landesverein Vom Rotes Kreuz). Wreath surrounding the center. Badge is deeply vaulted and of nice heavy construction. Metal being copper with silver plating. Made by prominent Prussian mint 'Godet of Berlin'. Badge numbered 1207. Number of awards falls below 1400, making this one of the later issues, perhaps 1910-14. Pinback for fastening. Enamels are quite nice, some small hairline cracks to white and a spot to red (looks like it was struck and some spider cracking had occurred), however not detractive. No chips whatsoever. Shows wear points. An exciting piece of world Red Cross memorabilia. .46mm x 46mm. Item # Rdc-35. *SOLD*

1915 Polish Commemorative badge of the Men and Ladies Association of the Red Cross of Galicia

Super rare 1915 Polish Commemorative badge of the Men and Ladies Association of the Red Cross of Galicia (Southeast part of Poland). A little history to inform you on Polish RC origins... Prior to 1914 Poland was not an independent country and the Red Cross could not officially be formed. From 1912 - 1919, a number of smaller organizations with similar goals to RC were formed. Austrian Occupational authorities agreed to allow forming of the 'Polish Samaritan' group. In 1914 groups associated with main cities had been organized in Krakow, Lwow and Warsaw (under the Russian authority). German authorities did not allow the organization to exist (Poland was divided between the German, Austrian and Russian Empires). Only when Poland gained its independence back - after WW1 ended was the Polish Red Cross was officially founded on April 29, 1919. I have more details on the above topic if you're interested. The badge offered here is for the member of the Krakow (Cracow) branch of the 'Galicja Red Cross'. Black, red and white enamels on silver plated bronze. Check out the intricate pattern to red enamels! Original pinback is gone, but fitted with stick pin. Austrian maker (how interesting), 'Geb. Jager, Gablonz j/n.' impressed to reverse. Most silver wash remains. Some light darkening. 23.5mm in diameter. Extremely rare piece of the European/Polish Red Cross. Very few of these remain today and would be impossible to replace. If you'd like a rare RC item - this is as rare as it gets!!  Item # Rdc-53 *SOLD*

Hungary - unknown Red Cross badge. Judging by its size (62mm x 45mm) and appearance (vaulted and curved) I think that it was used as a uniform insignia, perhaps worn at the shoulder of a sleeve. Most likely prior to or WW1 era. Die-struck in metal. Very nice design of oak and laurel branches surrounding national arms with crown of St. Stephen atop. Red enamelled cross to center. Vertical pin for fastening to reverse. Much age darkening does reveal traces of original gilt. Very unusual and definitely one of a kind piece. Item# Rdc-39. *SOLD*
